Colorectal Cancer Screening in Ontario

Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when found early.

Screening can find colorectal cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment is more likely to be successful.

Ontario offers free colorectal cancer screening for eligible individuals with a valid OHIP card.

Who Should Be Screened?

Your screening recommendations depend on your risk level.

Average Risk

You are considered average risk if you:

  • Are 45 to 74 years old
  • Have no symptoms
  • Do not have a parent, sibling, or child who has had colorectal cancer

If you are at average risk, you should complete a FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) every 2 years.

What Is a FIT Test?

A FIT test is a simple at-home test that checks for tiny amounts of blood in your stool that cannot be seen.

Your healthcare provider can help you get a FIT kit and explain how to complete the test.

Increased Risk

You may be at increased risk if you have:

  • A parent, sibling, or child who has had colorectal cancer
  • A personal history of colorectal cancer or certain types of polyps
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Certain inherited conditions linked to colorectal cancer

If you are at increased risk, you may need a colonoscopy instead of a FIT test.

Speak with your healthcare provider about the screening option that is right for you.

Symptoms That Need Assessment

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:

  • Blood in your stool
